Ljubljana celebrates World Art Nouveau Day

Between 7 and 11 June 2026, Ljubljana will host a varied programme of free events dedicated to Art Nouveau, a style that significantly shaped the appearance of European cities, including Ljubljana, at the turn of the 20th century.

World Art Nouveau Day is celebrated on June 10th, the anniversary of the deaths of two remarkable architects of the period, Antoni Gaudí and Ödön Lechner. The idea for World Art Nouveau Day arose in 2013 among collaborators of a Hungarian magazine. Art Nouveau Magazine, and since then, activities related to this day have been coordinated by the international Réseau Art Nouveau Network in Brussels and the Ruta del Modernisme in Barcelona, of which Ljubljana is also a member.

Ljubljana is also joining the celebration this year, offering a diverse programme for various generations of visitors between 7 and 11 June. The events will take visitors on a journey through Art Nouveau buildings, museum collections, architectural stories and creative workshops, inviting them to discover the sinuous lines, floral motifs, depictions of women, animals and mythical creatures that marked the art and architecture of the turn of the century.

The programme will begin on Sunday, 7 June, at the National Gallery with a creative workshop for families. The magical world of Art Nouveau, intended for children aged 5 to 9. A guided tour will follow on Monday, 8 June Maks Fabiani and the former Slovenian Square, which will shed light on the history, architecture, and urban significance of today's Miklošič Park, as well as Fabiani's role in shaping Art Nouveau Ljubljana after the Easter 1895 earthquake.

On Tuesday, 9 June, the National Museum of Slovenia – Metelkova will hold an interactive programme Art Nouveau!, within which visitors will get to know art from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century through a social game, a viewing of selected objects, and a creative challenge. The central day of the celebration, Wednesday, June 10th, will bring several events: a guided tour Art Nouveau in Ljubljana City Museum of Ljubljana, tour Hotel Tivoli, or Švicarija as part of the Live Architecture programme and an evening film screening The Lechner Legacy, dedicated to the legacy of the Hungarian architect Ödön Lechner.

The programme will conclude on Thursday, 11 June, with an architectural walk for families. Art Nouveau Ljubljana, which will take participants through puzzles and stories across the city's facades, symbols, and architectural details of Art Nouveau Ljubljana.
