Invitation

Along the trails of Roman Emona with two experts - a curator and a conservator

On the occasion of the European Archaeology Days, on Friday, 13 June 2025, at 16.30, we invite you to a unique walk through the centre of Ljubljana, where together we will discover the remains of ancient Emona and learn about the work of experts who are responsible for the preservation of archaeological heritage in the urban environment.

Archaeologists will guide you through the Emona Archaeological Park Dr Bernarda Županek, Curator of Antiquities at the Ljubljana City Museum and Mija Topličanec, Conservation Consultant at the Ljubljana Regional Unit of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage. They will present the work of archaeologists and conservators, which usually remains hidden from the public eye, and talk about the challenges of protecting immovable heritage in the modern city.

We will start our journey in the basement of the Ljubljana City Museum, where we will see a model of Emona and the preserved remains of the suburbs of Emona. The route will lead us on to the construction site of the new National University Library (NUK2), one of the most important recent archaeological sites, where we will discuss how Ljubljana's immovable heritage was protected in the past and how it is protected today, what the challenges of the profession are in a project as large as the extensive and technically demanding construction in the middle of the former Emona, and what adjustments to the plans and work are needed to make this possible. We will then head towards a prime example of the synergy of new and old, the so-called Feranto Blocks by architect Edvard Ravnikar. Within these we will visit the Jakopič Gallery, where the Emonite Basilica and the Rotunda are presented. We will finish our tour at the Early Christian Centre of Emona, where we will see the remains of a baptistery, learn about the quality of the presentation of Roman remains from the 1870s and discuss modern approaches to the presentation of archaeological sites. The archaeologists will also provide useful guidance on how to plan private developments in archaeologically rich and protected areas and discuss the challenges of working with architects and investors.

Join us and discover what lies beneath the surface of modern Ljubljana - on a special guided tour that will reveal the city's rich past and highlight the importance of preserving Roman remains in a fast-growing urban environment.

In case of bad weather, the guided tour will be cancelled.
