Discovery of a hypocavity in the Insulla XLVI area

In the course of the archaeological excavations carried out by the Centre for Preventive Archaeology of the ZVKDS in the area of the construction of NUC II, a small part of the insul XXVII and XLVI is being investigated, together with the area of the street between them.

In this paper we present the XLVI insula in its youngest phase of use, from the beginning of the 4th century onwards. In two rooms of the insula, located within our excavation field, we discovered the remains of a hypocaust, a floor heating system. The better-preserved hypocaust was originally built of brick columns on which brick slabs were laid to form a mortar screed with a mosaic of small stone cubes. As the hypocaust had settled or been damaged in one of the corners during the use of the space, the corner was rehabilitated. The rehabilitation was carried out using Moravian sandstone pillars and slabs, and a mortar screed with brick cubes was used as a pavement.
