Triglav panorama

Yesterday, 4 September 2025, four restorers from the ZVKDS Restoration Centre and the National Museum of Slovenia reinstalled the Triglav Panorama in the Aljaž Tower. According to Jakob Aljaž, it is the most important piece of equipment and will allow visitors to the highest monument in Slovenia to "get a sufficient orientation" and "sitting in the tower, have the whole vast panorama painted before them and be able to compare it with the view in nature" (1897, Aljažev stolp, Planinski vestnik 7).

The panorama was painted by the academic painter Maja Šubic and the inscriptions were executed with the assistance of the academic painter Irena Romih. It is executed using the same technique as the original one, namely oil paint on a sheet metal support. Franjo Jeglič, a teacher from Dovje, who painted the original panorama on Aljaž's commission, was assisted by Pernhart's scaled-down panorama of the view from Triglav. In a similar way, the panorama was created this time too, with Pernhart's version being updated and functionally adapted with the help of panoramic photographs by Damjan and Jernej Kokelj and the painter's keen eye for detail.

The installation of the panorama in the Aljaž Tower marks the end of a comprehensive renovation process that started in September 2018. At that time, the tower was moved to the valley, followed by a thorough rehabilitation of the structural and other elements, and then returned to the top of Triglav after just over a month. The smooth renovation was thanks to a travelling exhibition and a film of the same name This pleh has a soul, as they have made an important contribution to raising public awareness of the Tower's significance and uniqueness.

The installation of the panorama also coincides with the 130th anniversary of the erection of the Aljaž Tower and the 180th anniversary of the birth of Jakob Aljaž. The tower has been given a key integral element that enriches its content as a national symbol. By working to preserve it, we, the experts, conservators and conservation-restoration specialists, also want to contribute to ensuring that the values it embodies - patriotism, courage, determination, faith, optimism, cultural commitment, ingenuity, perseverance, self-sacrifice, warm-heartedness, humility, team spirit, etc. - will continue to have a home in the land under the Triglav Mountains. Let the Tower not be a stumbling block and a divider, but a building block of unity for good.
